Sick Oak Tree?

by

UPDATE: My tree has finally got leaves on it and it is looking much happier. I really think it was very confused. As you will read in the post below, we have had funny weather. Cold to freezing. Hot and very warm temperatures to rain and more rain to none at all. This I think confused the poor oak tree and of course no leaves as it did not know if it was spring, summer or winter.

The pictures below were taken on the 29th of December 2013, however for the last week or so we have noticed more leaves and more growth. I have only made sure that the tree in hot weather had a drink and looked for obvious sign of damage, insect or bug infestations which there was none. I just hoped for the best. The hardware store people never called back and we did think we might have to cut it down if it did not come good. As you can imagine we are very happy that it is better and we will have a nice tree for shade in the summer and especially February one of the hottest months here.

End of update, now below my original post starts.

Hello all my lovely readers. I need your help. My oak tree has not leafed and normally does so by now. Others in the area have done so, and makes me feel that mine is sick.

Some branches have broken and one in particular snapped due to the storms we have had a while back. We don’t have a big enough ladder to get it off the tree and I’m sure it is not the fallen branch that is causing an issue. Some branches have buds and leaves on it but mostly it is just sticks.

One thing is that this tree seems to be where possums jump up and down, and relive themselves (pooh and wee), I’m not sure that this is helping the tree but has not been a problem in the past.

When we first moved in we thought it was dead and this was due to the previous owner cutting it back to just sticks and the trunk. However in the spring when we moved into the house it had leaves on it and it has grown and bloomed ever since. This is the first time we have noticed an issue with our beloved oak tree.

We have had no rain, then heaps of rain, then freezing temperatures, then hot temperatures and more rain and then no rain. Could the tree just be confused? We are not sure what to do for it and as we are not flush with cash, so getting an expert in is not something we can do.  I need your help! Do you know what to do? Is there someone you know that can help me and of course the oak tree?

Can anyone advise what we can do to help our tree? We don’t want to lose it and dearly would love to keep it. It keeps us in shade in summer and it is so nice to have lunches under the branches when sunny. I have added some pictures below so that you can see what I am referring to, and hope that they help illustrate what I have mentioned above.

We live in the Blue Mountains in NSW Australia so we get freezing temperatures and very hot summers. As mentioned it was fine for over 10 years and we have been at this house since 2002 so it has been a while and only just now that it is not looking well.

The tree does not look great without leaves but for a long while we thought it was okay due to winter. Now we are in summer and spring has passed we are now realizing that there is an issue. You can see where the previous owner of the house cut the tree off to get rid of it but it continue to fight on and grow.

I would greatly appreciate any advice for our tree and welcome your comments.
